The magic of Ehris

There is no magic in Ehris; the people of the land have never even conceived of such a thing. Magic does not exist; it never has and never will in their eyes.

The reality is that magic does exist in the land of Ehris, but it is so rare (and so often excused as a divine manifestation of the Arlith or some chaotic aberration of the land) that no one believes in it. Its use is kept tightly under guard and its instruction all but impossible to attain. In all of Ehris, with a total population of over 150 million, the number of individuals who have the ability to manifest anything even remotely related to magic is less than 200,000.

In the land of Ehris, no division exists between arcane and divine powers. There is no "cleric" and there is no "mage" in their traditional forms.

Magic on Ehris is the direct manipulation of energy called forth from a specific source to enact change upon the environment.

The generic term used to describe any individual who can access such energies is "Caller" (though some races use the term "Bringer" or "Shaper" interchangeably). The term Caller came about because one "calls forth" the energy -- the only difference is what type of energy is called.

It should be noted that the term Caller (or Shaper or Bringer) is usually used out of fear or anger rather than any form of respect or awe.

It should also be noted that the people of Ehris do not understand the Dom'ae or the Templars to be Callers. Any powers the Dom'ae or Templars have or manifest are believed to be the Arlith channeling its power through them.

There are two different types of Callers known to the people of Ehris (and two types that are not known):

  • Dom'ae (Lawful dominance)
The Dom'ae call forth the life essence of those around them. They consume the very life force of their victims to fuel their powers. The price for such an ability is great, but in the end the Dom'ae are some of the most feared individuals in all of Ehris. The magic of the Dom'ae is extremely difficult to wield and almost impossible to master.

  • Templar (No dominance, all encompassing)
The templars call forth their energy directly from the Arlith itself. They use the energy of their god to fuel their powers. The magic of the Templars is by far the easiest to learn and the most versatile to use.

  • Caliis (Chaotic dominance)
The Caliis call forth the elemental energy of the physical land. They use the primordial, highly chaotic, energies of Ehris herself as fuel for their powers. Not surprisingly, Caliis tend to be rather chaotic individuals whose powers change them in unexpected ways. The magic of the Caliis is unknown to the people of Ehris.

  • Shadan Aria (Neutral dominance)
The Shadan Aria call forth their energy from the world of the spirits. They pull their energy from the spirit world as fuel for their powers. Their manifestations return the energy back into the natural cycle of the world where they believe it is re-absorbed by Ehris. The magic of the Shadan Aria is unknown to the people of Ehris.
