Background:
Eliantyr was born in the Elven kingdom of Eaerlann in the
year –3342 D.R. He was the third, and last, child born of Arenalas
and Daemarran Nae C'lshrian – two of the many elves that helped
to settle the kingdom of Eaerlann a few centuries back. Eliantyr
was brother to Ehntaras and Esamiil, the second and first child of
the family respectively.
As with the rest of his family, Eliantyr showed aptitude for the
arcane very early in his life and by the age of 30 was apprenticed
to the high mages in the kingdom. He was assigned a mentor who would
watch over his development from then on. And for the next 15 years
Eliantyr would pour over the fine art of Elven magic finding that
not only did he have great skill for such things, but also that he
thoroughly enjoyed the craft.
Around the time of Eliantyr's 42 nd birthday it was revealed to
him that at least some of his talents seemed to lie elsewhere than
with his arcane colleagues and it was suggested to him that perhaps
further investigating this path would prove beneficial. (As proof
of this his master pointed to the fact that Eliantyr had the tendency
to forgo some of the verbal or somatic components that were required
for the casting of a certain spell, and yet the spell effect seemed
to work as expected). It was suggested to Eliantyr that he be sent
to another place for further study, a place where there existed individuals
who might be better able to ascertain the true nature of these powers
and, if appropriate, help him to develop them further. After many
long talks between the Elven magi and his family, it was agreed that
Eliantyr would be sent, on a temporary basis, far to the east to
have the opportunity to explore these other abilities.
He was sent hundreds of miles to the east, past even the far border
of the human settlement of Netheril. There, he took up residence
with his new master (who he knew only as Nhilar) in a small tower
set against a range of mountains. It was a very secluded location,
aggravated by the fact that upon arriving and settling in Eliantyr
quickly came to the realization that he was apparently the only student
of this Nhilar.
But, time quickly moved forward as he was thrust into his schooling
and training. He was allowed to keep a degree of correspondence with
his family, and longed for the day when he would be able to return
to his homeland, but that was about the only communication with the
outside world that he was allowed.
Nhilar proved to be a solemn, but very capable, teacher and Eliantyr
came to look forward to the time spent with his master in study.
For the next 30 or so years Eliantyr would grow in both his aptitude
for the arcane as well as for the powers of the mind. He learned
how to understand and work with both simultaneously and slowly began
to understand the degree of knowledge that could be attained on this
path. By combining both disciplines in the way instructed by Nhilar,
Eliantyr was able to advance much more rapidly through the necessary
progressions for each.
Eventually, it came time for Eliantyr to decide whether he would
continue on with Nhilar and move into more advanced training, or
return home to Eaerlann to continue with the high mages there. It
was a difficult decision, one that took Eliantyr many moons to decide.
On one hand he wanted nothing more than to return home to be with
his family again, and on the other hand he was completely engrossed
in the teachings of Nhilar and hated the idea of being away from
his studies for even a day. In the end, Eliantyr decided to remain
with Nhilar and begin his advanced training. The last round of correspondences
with his family had indicated their support for what he was doing
and seemed to suggest that staying a little while longer might prove
the most beneficial. Besides, there would be plenty of time later
for family gatherings.
Within a few years Eliantyr was allowed access to parts of the tower
previously restricted to him, the lowest parts, wherein the private
labs of Nhilar were located. In them, to his surprise and horror,
were rooms filled with the preserved bodies of dozens of other inhabitants
of Faerun. Elves, dwarfs, humans and many others could be seen all
perfectly preserved and held in some kind of stasis. In addition,
the remains of many others could be seen cast about amidst various
worktables with a clear focus being on the soft tissue of the brain.
Eliantyr was horrified. He had no idea that there was such a price
to pay for the knowledge he had acquired and confronted Nhilar about
it. He wished to discontinue his training immediately and to return
home. Unfortunately for Eliantyr that was not an option and the subsequent
battle that arose between master and student was brief. In the moments
before his imprisonment Eliantyr looked deep into the eyes of his
master and came to understand the true nature of Nhilar.
Eliantyr was defeated – but not slain -- and was placed in
stasis for later study. He became one of the many motionless forms
encased in the translucent stone along the wall of Nhilar's laboratory.
(Eliantyr was 79 when he was imprisoned).
Millennia would pass and the being known as Nhilar would eventually
be attacked and defeated by the drow sometime around 624 D.R. Nhilar
would dig deep into the earth beneath his tower and would eventually
open an entrance to the Underdark. It was not long before the drow
became aware of Nhilar and his experimentations, and would seek the
knowledge he had been able to acquire.
Once Nhilar had been defeated, the entire contents of his tower
were moved piece by piece to the nearest drow settlement for further
study (Szith Morcane). These contents included about a half dozen
preserved forms, mostly of surface creatures, encased in a translucent
rock of some kind. Over the years the contents would be lost, deemed
of little value and stored or traded away to various inhabitants
of the Underdark. The six preserved individuals were placed in storage
in the settlement and all but forgotten about. Eliantyr was among
those six, his master never having released him.
Eventually, in the year 1373 D.R., the Heroes
of Oakhurst would finally release Eliantyr from his imprisonment
after over 4500 years.
