Background:
The origins of Sha’andr Nae C’lshrian, Archmage of Ildurath
and heir to the Spellmajor of Cormanthyr, are clouded in the mysteries
of the past.
It is unknown where Sha’andr was born, the first
records of his whereabouts center around the sanctuary of Candlekeep
where it is assumed his was taken shortly after his arrival in the
world. There are no records of who his parents were, though his father
eventually made himself known.
Sha’andr spent the first few
decades of his life in Candlekeep, where he was taught and raised
by the monks of the citadel. There he had a vast array of resources
with which to learn about the world, and was given the opportunity
to explore as desired. His natural curiosity led him to the study
of magic.
It became quickly apparent that Sha’andr was a magical
prodigy, showing aptitude with the Art at a very young age. He had
an innate understanding of the Weave, and an insatiable imagination
that served to fuel his desire to work with the natural energies
of the land. It was, in no small part, this inherent aptitude with
magic that allowed Sha’andr to survive, and be victorious,
in the war of the Bhaalspawn.
Sha’andr was eventually forced
to leave Candlekeep and travel out on his own. The young elf’s
blood burned with his, as of yet unknown, heritage and he was called
out into the world to fulfill his destiny.
It is believed that Sha’andr
was born a child of Bhaal, and took part in the war of the Bhaalspawn
that ravaged parts of the Sword Coast, the Western Heartlands and
the region of Amn during the Year of the Tankard and the Year of
the Unstrung Harp (1370-71 D.R.). However, Sha’andr fought
against his destiny and rather then take part in the war for personal
gain he did so to try and rid the world of the threat that he and
his siblings posed.
It is said that he was successful in defeating
the other Bhaalspawn, and in doing so claimed the right to the Throne
of Bhaal -- where he could ascend and become the reincarnation of
the dead god. But rather then claiming his birthright Sha’andr
chose to remain in a mortal shell, forsaking his bloodline. In doing
so he sealed the fate of Bhaal forever, and insured that the dead
god could never again threaten the land of Faerun.
All of this happened
before Sha’andr had even celebrated his 90th year
of life. He had lived enough for twenty men before he was little
more than a youngling. Even so, it was just the beginning.
After the
war, and after experiencing first-hand the recklessness with which
the inhabitants of Faerun wielded magic, Sha’andr chose to
channel his energy into the creation of Ildurath -- an academy of
magic where formal training and guidance could be sought in the ways
of the Art.
As a reward for his deeds during the war, Sha’andr
was granted his choice of land in the Western Heartlands. He chose
a small section of land between the Cloak Wood and Candlekeep on
which to build the first tower of Ildurath -- the Tower
of Knowledge.
Word
spread quickly of Sha’andr’s deeds in the war, and of
his endeavors to build an academy of magic that was open to anyone
wishing to learn more about the Art. Over the next few years hundreds
of people came to Ildurath.
In time, Ildurath gained the attention
of Evermeet. And on one fated evening shortly after the completion
of the Tower of Knowledge Sha’andr was summoned
to meet with Laeroth Runemaster, Archmage of Evermeet. Laeroth told
Sha’andr
that he wanted Ildurath to become the next great elven empire, and
that should Sha’andr agree to dedicate Ildurath to this cause
he would see to it that the full force of the elven people was behind
him.
Laeroth also said that he would go before the other high elven
magi and request that Sha’andr be allowed to begin studying
with them.
Sha’andr agreed, and Ildurath prospered. He returned
to Baldur’s
Gate, and to the people of Amn, to request purchase of additional
land in the Western Heartlands. He sought to expand the boundaries
of Ildurath for the betterment of all. His request was granted, and
Ildurath was expanded.
With the secrets imparted to him through the
study high elven magic, Sha’andr
researched and crafted the Mythal of Ildurath. It was an event heralded
as the true beginning of Ildurath as the next great elven empire.
Years
passed, and finally Sha’andr’s true destiny was revealed
to him.
A band of emissaries from Ildurath uncovered one of the legendary Elfblades
of Cormanthyr, the Artblade, in the ruins of Netheril. After returning
with it to the elven court, Sha’andr received a vision from the
Shrinshee. In it, she showed him the path that he would follow as heir
to the Spellmajor of Cormanthyr. He was to bond with the Artblade,
and in doing so set off a series of events that would see a return
of the elven people to the land of Faerun. The elven kingdoms of old
would be reborn, and Ildurath would join them in creating a new, unified,
elven nation.
