Becoming a student

Ildurath is an academy of arcane knowledge open to any who seek to learn the Art of magic. All those who wish to join the academy must begin their training as children (1st level or lower) and must meet the following requirements:

  • Intelligence or Charisma: 15 (or greater)
  • 2 or more ranks in at least 2 of the following skills: concentration, knowledge (arcana), spellcraft, diplomacy, alchemy, craft, scry
  • Must be able to demonstrate some level of aptitude for learning the Art
  • Must be able to demonstrate a sincere desire to learn the Art

If the above conditions are met and the applicant is accepted, the Initiate begins their training under an Advisor (one on one instruction).

The Initiate will be apprenticed to his/her advisor for up to three years, during which time a minimum of nine months/year must be spent with the Advisor at the Tower of Knowledge (unless other arrangements are made -- at the discretion of the Advisor).

At the end of three years (or earlier if the Advisor approves) the Initiate must decide if he/she wishes to continue on the path of the magic user. (Based on the knowledge and experience gained through the apprenticeship, the Initiate should know if the path of the magic user is right for him/her).

If they choose not to continue, they are dismissed from the academy and no further instruction can occur. If they choose to continue on, they must prepare themselves for the trials of the academy. And it is only upon successful completion of these tests that the Initiate will be admitted into the academy as a full member and is able to continue on with their instruction.

If the Initiate fails the tests they are allowed one additional chance. If they fail the second time they are dismissed from the academy.

If they succeed, they become full members of the academy and gain the following benefits:

  • The title of Neophyte
  • The right to attend the full curriculum offered at the academy
  • The right to attend special symposiums and workshops offered at the academy
  • The right to acquire the Mage of Ildurath prestige class should they meet the requirements for it
  • Access to any and all non-restricted areas of the Tower of Knowledge including student accommodations
  • Access to the academy's reference library (reduces time and cost of spell research by 10%)
  • Access to spells for copying (with appropriate permissions)
  • Improved resources for making and purchasing magical items
  • Rental of magic items (buy at full price, when done academy will buy back at 80%)
  • Annual stipend for living expenses and supplies (100gp/yr)

There is no monetary cost to the student if they are accepted into the academy (no tuition). However, the students of Ildurath are often called on to perform services for the academy from time to time in compensation.
